Voices of the River: River Stories with Hayden Mathews. 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Does the Potomac River look the same now as it did when John Smith and his crew sailed up the river in June 1608? Find out in this program led by Hayden Mathews, regional historian, lecturer, and tour guide. Hayden will show how the non-living environment (land, water, atmosphere and climate) and the living, biological community (the flora and fauna) have influenced each other over time, with a focus on the changes that have occurred since the arrival of humans in the Potomac Valley 15,000 years ago. By going back 500 million years into deep geological history, this one-hour program provides a broad perspective from which to appreciate the treasures that are the modern Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay watershed. Canal Stewards at the River Center. 10 a.m. to noon. Help to clean up the lockhouse area and the nearby towpath. This cleanup is open to all ages, and all the necessary supplies will be provided - just wear clothes that can get dirty. This event is part of the National Park Service's Canal Stewards program, engaging volunteers to become long-term caretakers of a site within the C & O Canal National Historical park.
