Voices of the River: River Stories with Hayden Mathews. 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Does the Potomac River look the same now as it did when John Smith and his crew sailed up the river in June 1608? Find out in this informative program led by Hayden Mathews, regional historian, lecturer, and tour guide. Hayden will show how the non-living environment (land, water, atmosphere and climate) and the living, biological community (the flora and fauna) have influenced each other over time, with a focus on the changes that have occurred since the arrival of humans in the Potomac Valley 15,000 years ago. By going back 500 million years into deep geological history, this one-hour program provides a broad perspective from which to appreciate the treasures that are the modern Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay watershed.
