Both the parking lot and entrance to Cabell’s Mill are now closed through Oct. 7 for construction work related to the new Stewardship Education Center being built there. This lot is across from Walney Pond in Ellanor C. Lawrence Park in Centreville, and the changes being done to it will result in long-term benefits to the environment.
Plans include a larger parking lot with features and a design that’ll better control and filter water from rain and runoff from the adjacent neighborhood. These improvements are not only best practices for the facility’s green design, but will ensure a healthier Walney Pond, since it’s surface-fed.
Slated are porous pavers for the parking spaces, trees planted within the lot to reduce heating, and low vegetation to enhance the new, water-channeling swales. The education center is set for completion in early 2023.
